I alluded to
in my first blog post that writing my book has facilitated a change of career
for me. I shall share my journey with you and where I have ended up.
I have always
had a passion for clothes, colour and everything related to styling ever since
I can remember. It was my dream to create a career in the creative industries
and, in particular, in fashion. However, it was not to be. My father had other
ideas.
He considered
a career in the creative industries to be precarious and not a ‘proper’ job. He
therefore steered me towards the more traditional career opportunities. The
result is I meandered through a number of career experiences and not all of
them rewarding. The reason being that my heart was elsewhere. I drifted into
the corporate world for some 18 years.
I did take a
break from the corporate world and trained as a fashion designer in London
during my mid-twenties. I worked independently as a designer and dressmaker for
five years or so before being drawn back into the corporate world. I was the
proverbial square peg in a round whole. Having gained a fairly senior position
in the corporate world, I trained as an Executive Coach, which I thoroughly
enjoyed.
Apart from my
passion for all things clothing related, I also tremendously enjoyed working
with people and supporting them in their own development. I only discovered as
I got older a further love for learning. The combination of these two interests
meant I then became an academic, designing and delivering programmes to mainly
adult learners in my area of expertise, namely coaching. Hence the reason for
publishing two books in this discipline.
It was only as I started writing H.A.G.S. with Attitude, encouraging women to
pursue lost interests and passions, that I decided to put into practice what I
was preaching. So, just as the first lockdown occurred, I decided to embark on
a further learning journey and include styling with my knowledge of fashion and
design.
Given the
audience for my book, I have created a styling business, working with women of
age 50 and beyond. It is my desire to help women rediscover their confidence
and interest in their appearance. I now offer my services online and it is a
wonderful opportunity to combine my knowledge of coaching, fashion, colour and
styling.
As you would
imagine, my business is called hags with attitude: love your age. I will share
more of that in the next blog.
