DIFFERENT HATS

I have always enjoyed the process of writing and I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to write for different audiences over the years. Each one expecting a different output, angle and style. This week I once again returned to academic writing.

I have been invited to contribute to an MSc in Coaching and Mentoring starting in September, with a prestigious University. It is an exciting opportunity and one which I am very much looking forward to. I will therefore transition from the University I am currently working with on a part time basis to a new adventure with another institution.

I will be responsible for preparing the lectures and reading material for some of the topics relevant and related to the subject matter. I once again experienced the thrill this week of immersing myself in the joys of research and discovery in a subject I find exciting.

One of the many benefits of technology is to be able to sit in the comfort of one’s own home and access all the resources a researcher could possibly need to progress their work. I am old enough to remember spending months in libraries pouring over physical books and journal articles to gather the information I needed for my writing.

On the other hand, there is something about being surrounded by books, and not to forget the smell of a library, that is conducive to the creative process of writing. When researching for my first Ph.D. I had the privilege of being given access to the Bodleian Library in Oxford.

The mere fact of being surrounded by some of the most influential manuscripts and rare books available, was an inspiration in itself. It was a sheer joy to immerse oneself in the research journey surrounded by history and an atmosphere one couldn’t possibly recreate at home. Furthermore, the collegiate environment created together with fellow researchers reduced the loneliness that often accompanies research journey.

I shall once again relish the pleasure of research and discovery for its own sake.
