The last year
has certainly challenged all of us to become more comfortable with our own
company as we were forced to remain in our own homes and immediate environments
for long periods of time. Thankfully technology has allowed us to continue
interacting with friends, family and colleagues.
The last year
would not only have taught us the value of our friendships, but possibly also
given us the time and space to reflect on our relationship with ourselves. I’m
a firm believer that the relationship we have with ourselves, determine the
quality of all the other relationships.
Apart from
the expectations we have of friendship such as attachment, affection, loyalty,
mutual respect and goodwill, true friendship is a relationship that is able to
survive the test of time and above all remain unconditional. A healthy
relationship is rarely one sided and requires two individuals who make the
effort to sustain and build on the relationship. It is the willingness to be
there for someone else when the chips are down. The last year would certainly
have tested relationships to the limit.
Sharing
companionship and support is not only limited to human beings. I know many
people would have discovered the joys of pet ownership over the last year. Pets
abundantly offer continuous unconditional love and unwavering companionship. In
many instances they may have been the only companion some people would have had
during the lockdown.
We often pity
those that either live on their own or choose to be on their own. We
immediately imagine that they are lonely. This is not necessarily true. I for
one cherish my times on my own for reflection, planning, creating or being out
in nature and enjoying the natural world. On the other hand, I also love the
company of stimulating conversation with the right people.
I have
thoroughly enjoyed the many projects I have been involved with over the last
year and to me the lockdown was in many ways a blessing and a gift. It has
allowed me to complete H.A.G.S. with Attitude and rediscover my love of fashion
and design.
I invite you
to reflect on your experiences of lockdown and identify the positives you may
not otherwise have enjoyed or discovered. Be sure to take these with you when
we once again emerge into the world.
